comprehensive digestive stool analysis (cdsa)
What is this test used for?
The Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis (CDSA) test looks at a range of different issues related to the digestive system, some or all of which may be causing IBS symptoms. There are several different types of test available, but in general a CDSA test will check for parasites, the balance of unfriendly to friendly bacteria, levels of digestive enzymes, general effectiveness of digestion, and overgrowth of yeasts.
How is the test taken?
The patient is given several collection vials, each of which contains a liquid preservative to keep the sample fresh. The patient is also given some small cardboard collection trays. The patients uses the trays to collect stool samples, usually over consecutive days. The sample is then mixed in with the preservative liquid in the vials. The sealed vials are labelled and sent off to the laboratory.
The lab analyses the sample and then sends out a detailed report which highlights any problems or abnormal results.
What treatment can be offered based on the results of this test?
A number of different treatments may be available. For example, if the test shows that you have very low numbers of friendly bacteria you may be advised to start taking probiotic supplements.
Where is this test available?
The most famous lab which offers this test is the Great Smokies Diagnostic Laboratory. However, the test is usually arranged through a gastroenterologist or private health specialist rather than directly arranged by the patient.
